Marine Gyro Compass (IMPA 370-001) is the primary heading reference instrument on all ocean-going merchant vessels — providing true north heading to the ship’s navigation system, autopilot, radar, ECDIS, and AIS. Unlike magnetic compasses, gyro compasses are unaffected by the ship’s magnetic field or cargo, making them essential for accurate navigation. SOLAS requires a gyro compass on all vessels over 500 GT.
